If you were lucky enough to visit the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show a few weeks ago, you might also have witnessed the two exciting days over which the 2016 Australia Cup Competition and the National Florist of the Future Competition were run.
Talented florists from all over Australia participated in the competitions, with each entrant using their extensive skills to create a series of challenging floral designs and produce incredible works of art.
For the first item, the competitors were supplied with a garden folly to decorate. The competitors supplied their own flowers, foliage, sundries and accessories and utilised various techniques in working on the folly, with one specific criteria - the folly was not to be structurally altered in any way.
The second and third items were complete surprises - competitors were not briefed on the actual schedule, flowers, foliage, sundries or accessories until ten minutes prior to the commencement of this item. Competitors were forced to think on their feet to produce outstanding floral pieces.
The fourth item was an unstructured piece. Choosing from the specific materials supplied for the item, the competitors were required to create a design for a bride to complement her outfit. The competitors were supplied with the flowers, foliage, sundries and accessories, together with a photograph of the bride and gown two weeks prior to the competition to allow them to prepare.
The final item was another surprise piece. Competitors were again, not briefed on the actual schedule, flowers, foliage, sundries and accessories until ten minutes prior to the commencement of this item, where they needed to put together a fantastic final piece to show off their skills.
With each entrant putting their best foot forward, the challenging task of determining the winners was left to a panel of experienced judges.
To all of the participants, we wish you a very big congratulation for your incredible feats throughout the competition. It is now time to announce and congratulate the winners!
