Weddings can be expensive affairs, as many can attest to, and among some of the various costs associated with putting a wedding together are the flowers.

From corsages and buttonhole flowers to centrepieces and bridal bouquets, flowers are an essential part of the celebration and event décor - some couples even allocate between 7% and 10% of their total budget to the flowers alone! While times can be tough, there are many ways to include flowers in your wedding. From choosing less costly flowers to opting for seasonal blooms, here are our tips for selecting the most affordable wedding flowers for your nuptials.

Choose Seasonal Flowers

When it comes to weddings, naturally all brides want theirs to be perfect. Hours are spent searching through Pinterest, creating boards filled with bouquets for inspiration, and focusing on colour schemes and flower types. Sadly, oftentimes the bouquet of their dreams is filled with flowers that won’t be in season at the time of the wedding. While many flowers can be imported when they are not locally in season, this means that they could cost more than one might have hoped for. When searching for bouquet inspiration, be prepared to ask your florist for seasonal flowers in similar textures and colours that can help you create your ideal bouquet.

Choose Less Costly Blooms

Whether in season or not, there are some flowers that are simply more expensive than others - even certain shades can be more costly than others. While flowers such as peonies, antique hydrangeas and cymbidium orchids can be on the more expensive side of the scale, there are more affordable flowers, such as carnations, lisianthus, baby’s breath, alstroemeria and chrysanthemums, which are just as beautiful. Available in a variety of colours and styles, using some of these more affordable flowers can help keep you within your allotted wedding flower budget.

Choose Bigger Blooms

While flowers such as peonies, hydrangea and dahlias may find themselves on the pricier end of the scale, using flowers such as these can at times assist in keeping costs lower. This is because of their size - bigger blooms often mean that fewer flowers are required. If there’s a particular flower that you love (which is also in season), don’t discount it purely based on cost – if it’s a big enough flower variety, you may only need a couple to achieve the effect you're after.

Think Outside The Box

When it comes to table centrepieces, there are so many options available to you. If your budget is a little tight but you really want flowers to decorate your tables, there are some beautiful and affordable options you can consider. Scattered flower petals and flower heads add a romantic, floral touch to your table decorations while Dendrobium orchids immersed in vases with floating candles are very much on trend – and not nearly as pricey as cymbidium orchids. Get creative and think outside the box!
