If you have received a flower gift from someone, flower care is essential to expand their lifespan and have a beautiful bouquet or floral arrangement brightening up your home for longer. Different types of flowers and plants require different care instructions, so here’s how you can take care of your flowers and plants so they are blooming for longer.
Once unwrapped, you will need to trim 2cm off each stem on an angle and place the stems in a clean vase of fresh water. Remove any leaves that may have fallen below the water line, as this will lead to bacteria growth in the vase water. If your florist has supplied a sachet of flower preservative, the instructions on the sachet and add to the vase. If not, you will be able to also extend the longevity of your flowers by changing the water daily, and recutting the stems every 2-3 days.
If your flowers have been arranged in a container, it is more than likely your florist has used floral foam. This will need to be topped up to ensure that the foam does not dry out. Remove any spent flowers to inhibit the growth of bacteria.
If you have received Flowers in box, please check to see if floral foam has been used. If not, a water bag would be used for travel purposes. In this case, the flowers will need to be placed in a vase to maintain longevity.
For all floral gifts, choose where you display your flowers wisely. Keeping them out of direct sunlight, away from heaters and air conditioners, and also away from the fruit bowl will help extend the longevity of your blooms. Take care with pets as some flowers can be harmful if consumed.
Indoor plants prefer to be kept out of direct sunlight, but thrive in a well lit room. They can dry out easily with heaters or air conditioners, so misting plants with water regularly will help create some humidity. The bathroom can be an ideal room to help increase moisture.
If a plant displays some yellowing in the leaves, it is generally a sign of over, or under watering. As a general rule, plants like to be watered once a week by watering over a sink, so that the water runs out of the drainage holes. The best way to tell is if you insert your finger into the potting mix - if it is damp, it won’t need watering. Always ensure that plants are able to drain any excess water away from the soil.
