Decorating and planning for Christmas is one of the season’s greatest pleasures. So, in preparation of the upcoming holiday season, we usually make a list of what Christmas presents to buy, how to decorate the Christmas tree, what theme to style the house and what to serve on the Christmas menu. While those are at the forefront of your mind, odds are some of our favourite memories are made around the table in the company of family and friends – which is why we think your dining table is so worth dressing up in seasonal fare.

We've rounded up some festive décor ideas to liven up your Christmas table setting this festive season.

Napkin Rings

It’s the smaller things that can make the biggest impact, like your festive napkin rings. Opt for patterned designs to add to the holiday colour scheme. If you’re feeling more artsy, you can use bits and pieces of your Christmas wrapping paper to dress up rolled napkins for your feast. You can also add small assorted ornaments like bells or glass beads for detailing.

Christmas Tree Napkins

If you want to skip the napkin rings, here’s another way you can wow your guests with this easy Christmas tree napkin folding idea. Simply fold your linen napkins into tree-shaped triangles and add a golden paper-cut star on top of the triangle for an extra festive touch at the table. For a more personal touch, use name cards as the trunk of the tree to help each member find their spot on the table.

Festive Name Tags

Speaking of nametags… Here's a great idea if you’re game to ditch the red tablecloth this year. Use chalkboard paper as your tablecloth under the plates and cutlery for each guest. Channel your inner artist and write their name in fancy fonts above the plates with some decorative designs and details. To add to the rustic theme of the table, you can make napkin rings by stringing cranberries on a thin wire in a circle with a sprig of eucalyptus.

String Lights

Nothing says Christmas more than fairy lights, don’t you think? They’re not only meant for the Christmas tree or to hang around the patio. You can also add them to your dining table intertwined between playful plush garlands.

Silverware Holders

Save your lacey silverware holders from spills and use a mini-Santa’s hat to dress up your silverware in. Another idea is a whimsical elf costume you can DIY. Simply trim a piece of green felt and stick the short ends together to form a ring. Layer a strip of black paper over the felt to replicate the belt and stick it to secure. Add details like buttons or golden paint for the buckle of the belt.

Botanical Touch

Don't underestimate the power of flowers. They’re such a hassle-free way to decorate and add a touch of nature and elegance to any table. Fresh flowers and green runners are undoubtedly an all-time favourite Christmas table decoration. Add understated holiday flair with Good Tidings – a simple arrangement of red, white and green blooms and a cute pinecone in a vintage vase. Alternatively, you can get A Touch of Christmas for a neutral table setting of white and green blooms that feel incredibly fresh.

Wood & Nuts

Not all Christmas table decorations have to be red and green. Take your holiday dining table to the next level with unexpected colour and textural combinations. Place large pinecones and acorns among fresh green runners for a stunning, wood-inspired look. Centred on a polished wood slice, place a large cylindrical glass vase filled with festive flavours and textures such as walnuts, unshelled nuts, pine boughs, cloves, cinnamon sticks, faux cranberries, kumquats and dried clementine’s to keep things whimsical and rustic. This festive display creates a feeling of warmth that's perfect for the holidays.
