But whether you took too long to book a table at your partner’s favourite restaurant, the traffic getting there from work will drive you crazy, or you just prefer to skip the crowds, sometimes staying in is far more appealing!

This Valentine’s Day, curl up on the couch with your love, order in or prepare their favourite dish, and hit play on one of these romantic movies…

Valentine’s Day

This movie is the perfect Valentine’s date in pre-packaged form. An obvious choice for the title, you’ll stay for the cute storylines and stellar cast.

The interconnected stories featuring Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, and Bradley Cooper, show love in almost all of its forms in a single day.

This movie is also a great one to watch with your besties as you try to decide which character you would choose to date.

The Notebook

Easily one of the most romantic films to watch on Valentine’s Day, you will swoon over the love between Noah and Allie.

A Valentine’s classic for a reason, this movie is ideal to watch while snuggled up with your love.

Don’t forget a box of tissues; this one is a tear-jerker!

Pretty Woman

A Cinderella story with a twist; a prostitute and a very rich man fall head over heels for each other, which is more romantic than may be expected.

The romantic comedy became a huge hit when it was released in 1990 and has been a favourite of Valentine’s celebrations ever since.

Not watching this one on Valentine’s Day would be a “big mistake. Big. Huge!”.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

This romantic comedy has something for everyone.

Steve Carell is married and seemingly living a perfect life, until he discovers that his wife has been unfaithful and wants a divorce.

Enter suave Ryan Gosling to take him under his wing and teach him how to be single.

Also featuring Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marissa Tomei, and Ryan Gosling’s abs.

Casablanca

If you prefer classic black and white films with dark and mysterious leading men and quality lines like “Here’s looking at you, kid” this one is for you.

Released in 1942 and starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, this movie follows nightclub owner Rick Blaine as he encounters his old love Ilsa with her new husband, a famed rebel.

Rick can help them escape the country, but he must say goodbye to Ilsa.

La La Land

It’s no coincidence that Ryan Gosling is in three of these movies; the man sure can make a romance.

This musical romance-comedy-drama features Gosling as a jazz pianist and Emma Stone as an aspiring actress, and they meet and fall in love in Los Angeles.

The film was met with critical acclaim when it was released and won a record-breaking seven Golden Globes, among other awards.

Silver Linings Playbook

Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, this movie will restore your faith in love overcoming complicated circumstances.

With both characters dealing with complex personal issues, they train for a dance competition, and of course, eventually fall in love.

This one is also great to watch with your best friends, especially if any of you are dealing with the complications of love this Valentine’s Day.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

This comedy will have you and your partner laughing out loud as you watch Jason Segel struggle to get over his ex (Kristen Bell) by heading to Hawaii.

As it turns out, she is also there with her new boyfriend (Russell Brand), and complications ensue when Peter (Segel) starts dating hotel employee Rachel (Mila Kunis).

Be warned, this movie will also have you planning your next tropical getaway together.

Lost in Translation

If clichéd romantic comedies aren’t your thing (or you can’t convince your partner to watch one), this film might be a good compromise.

Lonely movie star (Bill Murray) and just as lonely newlywed (Scarlett Johansson) meet in their Tokyo hotel and form an unlikely but meaningful bond.

They find distraction and escape in their friendship, and explore the foreign land together.

The Big Sick

Pakistani comic Kumail and American graduate student Emily meet and start developing a relationship, which is complicated by his traditional Muslim family.

When she becomes ill and falls into a coma, he finds himself bonding with her family.

A dramatic romance, this film will restore your faith in love.

Beauty and the Beast

You’ll likely know the fairy tale and earlier film but the version released in 2017 offers an updated tale to enjoy.

Fan favourite Emma Watson plays Belle, taken prisoner by the beast. She befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to see beyond the Beast’s exterior, to the prince inside.

You’ll be surprised by how many of the romantic film’s songs you will remember.

Fifty Shades Darker

If you were a fan of the original drama/romance film, watch the sequel with your partner (or head to the cinemas and catch the third instalment Fifty Shades Freed).

We won’t go into details as we’re sure you’re familiar with the films, but the second and third instalments promise to be just as drama filled… enjoy!
