Flower Names

Name popularity goes through cycles. While some names will never fall into obscurity (Like Sarah, Jessica and Ashleigh, to name a few) there are other names that we never even realised could be names (Apple, Memphis Eve, Ocean?). In a quest for new and original baby names, people have turned to lots of different places for inspiration from car makes and fruit bowls to fairy tales and even flower beds. There are myriad flower names out there gaining momentum so we decided to list out just a few of our favourites. Do any of these flower names strike a chord with you?

Aster
Aster is a vibrant flowering plant of the Asteraceae family which comprises of over 180 species. While relatively new to the flower name category, comedian Gilbert Gottfried used it when naming his daughter, Lily Aster.

Azalea
Azalea is part of the Rhododendron family, with big bright spring time blooms. Haven’t heard this name? It’s been made popular in recent times by pop artist Iggy Azalea and rapper Azalea Banks.

Bluebell
This lovely, light blue bloom gained momentum when Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell named her new born baby girl. Too much or just enough?

Clover
The perfect unisex name if you ask some! Better known as the lucky charm of the Irish, the popularity of this plant has steadily grown over the last few years.

Dahlia
This Mexican tuberous-rooted plant derives from the daisy family and was cultivated for its brightly coloured single and double flowers. In the language of flowers dahlia has come to represent elegance and dignity, so perhaps it’s a truly beautiful name for a baby girl.

Fleur
Fleur is the French word for flower. Flower was the name of the skunk in Bambi and the beautiful girl from Beauxbatons Academy of Magic in the Harry Potter series was named Fleur. All around a beautiful name, regardless of the language.

Ivy
Using Ivy as a name for baby girls is not uncommon – at least not in the world of fiction and celebrity. Beyonce and Jay-Z names their baby girl Blue Ivy and one of Batman’s most villainous opponents was Poison Ivy.

Jasmine
Jasmine has been a popular name for such a long time that it’s not altogether very surprising that some may not realise that it is in fact a flower. This Old World shrub, or climbing plant, is a decorative and fragrant beauty that flowers in shades of white, pink, or yellow. As a flower name, it became particularly popular after the release of the 1992 Disney film, Aladdin, featuring the spirited and beautiful Princess Jasmine.

Lotus
This beautiful and exotic bloom is particularly significant in the religious traditions of both Buddhism and Hinduism. Symbolizing purity, grace and spiritual growth, this flower name is simple yet beautiful.

Poppy
While many flower names sound soft, sweet and feminine, Poppy has more life to it. It’s been hugely popular in the celebrity world as well. Jamie Oliver named his daughter Poppy Honey Rosie and Anthony Edwards, Jessica Capshaw, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer also named their daughters poppy.

Primrose
Pretty and petite, primrose is the ultimate name for a sweet and shy little girl. Brought under the spotlight by the popular series, ‘The Hunger Games’, Primrose is a delicate, vulnerable but strong minded and determined character much like her floral name.
