We’re all guilty of investing in a cute little potted succulent to add life to our work desks or as an instant update to our home décor, without considering its own needs.
Succulents are known for being easy to care for, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t all killed one in the past.
Or if you’ve so far managed to tend yours well, you might know a serial succy killer friend who simply doesn’t know how it happens.
The demise of one of your favourite little plant friends can be heartbreaking, especially when you thought you were doing the right thing.
To get the most out of your succulents and ensure they are happy and healthy, there are some factors you must consider.
Here are our top tips for keeping your succulent friends alive…
It’s a common misconception that succulents can’t get enough sun.
Although they do enjoy a healthy dose of vitamin D, full sun can actually burn them. It’s best to select a spot for your plant that is brightly lit but without the heat of full midday sun.
If they are indoors, consider whether they are too close to heaters, the kitchen stove top, or a fireplace.
One quick way to make your plant sizzle is to place them in a bookshelf or other open cupboard where heat can be blasted in and circulated to create a mini plant sauna!
Succulents need little water to survive, and over watering can actually cause them to rot.
They will need slightly more water in warmer months than in cooler months, but be careful not to overwater in warmer months either.
Remember, just because you’re thirsty, doesn’t mean they are! We recommend letting them dry out between watering, and hydrate your succulent pals using a spray bottle so you don’t go overboard.
Just like any plant, it’s natural for some parts of your succulent to die off. Leaves near the base of the plant will often turn brown as new ones grow from the top.
The plant life cycle is amazing to watch, but you will also need to step in occasionally and help out.
It’s important to carefully remove any dead leaves so they don’t cause bacteria growth on your healthy plant.
Succulents tend to become uncomfortable in their original pots over time as their root systems grow.
Any responsible succulent owner will have to give their green guy some attention every year or two and swap them into a roomier (but not too roomy) pot.
Be sure to select soil that is gritty or sandy as succulents prefer to grow in those types of materials.
If in doubt, chat to your local nursery and they can point you in the direction of your succulent’s favourite soil.
When it comes to providing your succulent with love, it is easy to go overboard.
It is best to treat them like a grumpy cat and avoid too much handling – this means keep them out of reach of pets and small children.
Note that each succulent is different and you will have to pay attention to how each individual plant grows to determine what they want.
For instance, if you notice them growing towards the sunlight, they might not be getting enough. Move them around and see if their behaviour changes, fascinating stuff!
