Being able to create your flower bouquets at any time is a joy you can easily delight in. Growing a garden full of cut flowers will create a private source of flowers for bouquets and flower arrangements to brighten up your home, or be a gift for loved ones.

Before you plant your cut flowers

Preparing your garden before planting can’t be overlooked even though you’ll be cutting these flowers regularly. Your flowers will need soil that is rich in organic matter to improve water retention and drainage, ensuring they have the nutrients they need to grow and bloom. To maintain your garden, the most important thing you can do is regularly cut the flowers because your plants will set new flowers after cutting the first flush of blooms. Water your flowers weekly at minimum but if it is a particularly hot, dry summer, you will need to water more often.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers have an iconic look that can add some personality to any space. Sunflowers are fast-growing plants and will generally reach maturity around 80 to 120 days after germination, making them an ideal choice for a cut flower.

While sunflowers are typically known for their yellow petals, sunflowers come in a range of colours including yellows, oranges, reds and rusty hues. Our Bunch of Courage Sunflower bouquet will brighten up anyone's day when you give it as a gift. When you purchase this flower arrangement, a portion of the sale will also be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, so you are also supporting a worthy cause.

Lavender

Lavender is a versatile shrub that is a popular choice for a reason thanks to its iconic aromatic fragrance. Lavender flowers attract bees and butterflies, adding some life to your garden and encouraging pollination for the other plants. As a cut flower, regular cutting and pruning will encourage the growth of future blooms.

Lavender suits all garden styles and grows easily in garden beds. Lavender requires low maintenance to maintain as it’s able to thrive in most climates and is drought tolerant, meaning it can survive the harsh Australian summers. You can find lavender in most plant farms and even Bunnings.

Echinacea

Echinacea or purple coneflower is an easy-going daisy-like perennial that can bloom all year round. Like lavender, it attracts butterflies, bees and other insects to its flowers bringing plenty of nature to your garden. Echinacea naturally grows in clumps, so they won’t spread as far as some other perennials that you typically put in your garden.

You can find different varieties of echinaceas available in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours, so they will add variety to any bouquet or flower arrangement.
