Same day delivery to Albury
The major regional city of Albury, which is 259.2 kilometres (161.1 mi) from Melbourne and 462 kilometres (287 mi) from Sydney, is located on the northern side of the Murray River in New South Wales. The Murray River separates Albury from its twin city, Wodonga – which is located in Victoria on the South banks of the river and most locals refer to these twin cities as a single entity, calling it ‘Albury-Wodonga’.
Albury’s original inhabitants were the Wiradjuri people, who occupied this beautiful area for thousands of years previous to European settlement. While there are still a few remainders of the Indigenous culture in the area, there is surprisingly little documented history on the early encounters between the Wiradjuri and the Europeans, besides an 1839 proposal by Albury’s Assistant Surveyor, Thomas Townsend, to call the town by its original Indigenous name, 'Bungambrewatha'. Obviously, this never eventuated, and the town was instead named after the Kent, England village of Albury, as it was said to resemble it.
While the river crossing at Albury was discovered and named as the Hume River (now called the Murray River) by explorers, Hume and Hovell, in 1824. It wasn’t officially declared a town until 1838 but quickly became a popular city, so much so that it was even selected to be in the running for Australia’s National Capital! The population of Albury now stands at over 45,000, while ‘Albury-Wodonga’ is home to over 80,000 residents.
The CBD which lies between the Murray River, the railway line and Monument Hill – is a bustling hive of commercial activity with a plethora of shopping and entertainment opportunities. Within the CBD, the QE2 Square acts as a cultural precinct and features the Albury Library Museum, Performing Arts Centre, Convention Centre, Albury Regional Art Gallery, and the Murray Conservatorium. Other highlights in the area include the Monument - a First World War Memorial, the Wonga Wetlands, the Botanic Gardens, Mungabareena Reserve and the gorgeous Riverside Precinct.
