Located in the northern region of Tasmania, Australia, Devonport is a gorgeous city sited at the mouth of the grand Mersey River. Devonport is the major regional hub in the northwestern part of Tasmania and a vantage point for a beautiful ocean laden landscape.
Although the Mersey River was considered unsuitable for settlement in early years – due to heavily wooded banks and a sandbar blocking access into the estuary – Charles Oldaker decided to settle here in 1851. Shortly after, coal was discovered and the area became attractive to settlers wishing to seek their fortune. By the 1850’s, settlements had grown on either side of the picturesque Mersey River – Formby on the east and Torquay on the western-side – but Torquay quickly became the larger of the two regional settlements. This popular area became a real hub for the shipping industry and – within the period between the 1870’s and 1880’s – the mouth of the river was widened, giving it the ability to support regular shipping patterns. During the turn of the century, Formby received a much-needed boost to keep up with the shipping industry in the neighbouring city, receiving a major city connecting railway. This brought an influx of new buildings, and then in 1890, there was a public vote that united the two pinnacle towns, joining them as one major city. The name of Devonport was given to this new township.
The township now has a population of around 25,000 and its leading tourist attractions include some of the most stunning National Parks in Tasmania. Because of the modern airport – with a ferry terminal connect to Melbourne through the Bass Straight – Devonport receives a large amount of tourist traffic from travellers to Tassie, as this is their primary point of arrival.
The Devonport climate is ideal for those who enjoy an oceanic climate – mild to warm summers and cool humid winters. With summer temperatures averaging around 20°C to 26°C – and rarely maxing out over 30°C – it is perfect weather for those Aussies and tourists alike, who are not built for the hot weather. The winter months rarely drop below 0 °C, as a result of the constant cloud coverage, meaning that this area is an ideal location to live or visit.
