Same day delivery to Wollongong
The beautiful seaside city of Wollongong, New South Wales, is located on a coastal strip between the richly forested Illawarra Escarpment region and the Pacific Ocean, only 82kms south of Sydney. The Illawarra Escarpment is an amazing steep sandstone precipice, ranging in height between 150 and 750 metres (490–2,460 ft) above sea level. This ideally located city is the tenth largest city in Australia, and the third largest city in New South Wales, after Sydney and Newcastle.
Navigators, George Bass and Matthew Flinders, were the first Europeans to visit the area in 1796 but prior to this, the area was inhabited by the Indigenous Dharwal (or Turuwal) people. It was the Dharwal that gave Wollongong its name, and it is widely believed to mean ‘seas of the South’ in their language.
Since early days, the Wollongong area has been productive in many different industries, including cedar wood felling, livestock grazing, coal mining, coke (fuel made from coal) production, sea fishing, as well as iron, steel and copper production, among other things. The city today is still heavily reliant upon many of these industries; however, it is the beauty of the area that draws so many residents to its golden sandy shores.
With the green forested Illawarra Escarpment – which meets the sea to the north – as well as Mount Keira, Mount Kembla, Broker's Nose and Mount Murray providing a visually stunning backdrop to the city, the views are magnificent. To the south, Lake Illawarra offers a great opportunity for recreation and fishing, as do the many other estuaries within the area. The seventeen patrolled beaches are immensely popular with locals and tourists alike, as are the multiple public parks and bushwalking options. In town, there are a plethora of entertainment and shopping opportunities, all easily accessible.
The metropolitan area extends from Helensburgh in the north to Windang in the south and Interflora have florists throughout. Some of the Interflora florists in the city are located in Crown Street (two florists) and Corrimal Street, while others are located further afield, such as at Dapto and Thirroul.
