Celebrated since 1966, this holiday aims to show respect for the elders in the community, to recognise and thank them for their contributions to society, as well as celebrate their long lives. To honour elders, many communities throw parties or offer special gifts to wish them longevity. In some communities volunteers distribute free lunches to elderly people, while in other special ceremonies called keirokai shows are held where school children prepare dances and songs for their elderly audience.
During this holiday, the Japanese media often feature reports on the elderly population as well as highlight some of the oldest people in the country. A thoughtful way to honour the elderly in your life is to send a gift to show your appreciation. Our Keiro No Hi Collection features bouquets and arrangements filled with bright and colourful flowers along with hampers brimming with fresh seasonal fruit!
