Spring is a time of renewal when the world around us comes to life. Take advantage of the season by decorating your home with all of the bright flowers that bloom at this time of year. There are many flowers that bloom in spring. Whether you are after colour or fragrance, you can choose from a large range of options.

Standard options include:

To determine which flowers are the best for spring, we have compiled a list of flowers that are easy to grow in Spring and cope well with the Australian climate.

What flowers to grow in spring?

While there are many options, we have detailed our top 3 picks for Spring 2022:

Lily of the Valley

The Lily of the Valley, also called May Lily, is a hardy plant that can grow in many different types of soil. It has dark green leaves with small star-shaped flowers.

This is a great flower for the Spring as it flourishes in the warm sun that we experience in our Australian Springs and Summers. With partial shade, these flowers can form large colonies bringing the great fragrance they are known for to your garden or home. Once in full bloom, they make a quality bouquet to give to a loved one.

Gardenias

Gardenias are a popular choice among gardeners because they are fragrant, beautiful and not too difficult to grow. Gardenias have a naturally sweet smell that comes from the nectar of their blossoms. They can grow outside in warm climates but will need protection from frost. If you live in a cold climate, it is best to grow these flowers indoors in containers or greenhouses.

With a sunny and partially shaded area, Gardenias are able to achieve their bloom. Even though our warm Springs are warm and dry, Gardenias are able to tolerate these conditions and in extreme heat, they only require weekly watering. This will ensure Gardenia flowers are in full bloom in Spring and makes them one of our top picks for flowers to plant this Spring.

Orchids

Orchids are a top pick as they are easy to grow and require little maintenance. They also produce beautiful flowers that can be used in a variety of ways. Since they come in different shapes and sizes, you can find the one that best suits your needs. For example, if you want to grow an orchid from a cutting, you should choose a Phalaenopsis orchid. If you want to grow an orchid from seed, on the other hand, you should choose an Oncidium orchid. This is why orchids are one of the most popular flowers in Spring.

Depending on the type of orchid, the conditions in which they require to bloom will vary. In general, orchids prefer medium to lower sunlight with a preference for humid environments. This can be achieved by placing a humidity tray or planting it near a water source to increase humidity. Orchids don’t require much watering either so make the perfect flower if you are after something more low maintenance.
