As pet owners, you’re probably already aware of how curious your furry friends can be about everything in your house. They tend to gravitate towards everything they see at their level and will most definitely have a go at it, including flowers and foliage. As beautiful and harmless as it may seem to have colourful blooms around your tail-wagging companions, some can be highly toxic if ingested. Something as simple as drinking water from a vase containing cut flowers can also result in serious problems.

The wellbeing of your pets is of utmost importance, which is why you need to be aware of what flowers are non-toxic to them - whether you’re sending flowers to pet owners or purchasing them for yourself. While we suggest keeping any flowers out of reach of your pets, we’ve also put together a selection of flowers that are certified as pet-friendly flowers and are sure to add colour and texture to your space, while keeping them safe.

Roses

Did you know that one of the most romantic flowers in the world is pet-friendly? They’re safe blooms to have for your home and around your fur friends, so long as you remove the thorns to stop them from injuring themselves. It may also be worthy to take note that many roses contain cyanide in their leaves and stems, so be sure your pet doesn’t chew on the green parts of the plant.

Gerbera Daisies

Gerbera daisies are bright, eye-catching and cheerful classics available in a plethora of shades that pet parents can adore all day, as they’re non-toxic for pets. Having said that, flowers aren’t a usual part of your paw baby’s everyday diet which is why it would be a good idea to keep any flower arrangements out of their reach if possible, to also avoid chewed petals strewn all over the place.

Sunflowers

These bright, rustic flowers are attached with a natural phenomenon of facing the sun, and can be attractive to your pets as it can be to you. You can enjoy their charming and cheerful appearance on your windowsill or dining room table as these universally loved, golden beauties are instantly recognised as safe for pets. If a reasonable amount of sunflower skin is sniffed, played with or swallowed, it is not considered toxic but may cause minor digestive discomfort in dogs.

Alstroemeria

Astros are a favourite pet safe bloom that are seen around in many pet-friendly parks and gardens but are often mistaken for lilies (many of which are toxic). They’re a great replacement for lilies and come in all kinds of colours, which make them perfect to keep or grow for families that include four-footed members. You can enjoy them in a crowded or sparse arrangement on their own.

African Violets

The radiant colours of the African violet are sure to attract and entice your dog to play with them. But don’t worry, they’re absolutely safe and non-toxic to be around these colourful blooms. No matter where you decide to keep or plant them, African Violets are dog-friendly perennials that are also quite easy to take care of too.
